Frequently Asked Questions
Is DeclarativeOS compatible with my existing hardware?
Yes. DeclarativeOS supports most modern x86_64 machines. We can also assist with compatibility testing during your free trial using our bootable SSDs.
Can we still access our Windows files or systems?
Absolutely. DeclarativeOS includes built-in support for common file systems and network shares (e.g. NTFS, SMB/CIFS). Your users can access Windows network drives and files just like before. In addition, DeclarativeOS comes with a convenient start-menu button to reboot into Windows!
Will my users need to learn Linux?
Not necessarily. DeclarativeOS provides a familiar desktop environment with pre-installed tools, shortcuts, and browser access – designed to minimise user retraining. Admins get more power, but users just get work done.
What if we need specific software?
We offer package request support in all paid tiers, and full custom module development in Business and Enterprise plans. If it’s open source or standards-compliant, we can usually build it. Need to run legacy Windows software? We also support Wine to enable compatibility with many Windows applications directly on DeclarativeOS.
Is this secure?
Yes. DeclarativeOS is built on NixOS, which has a unique and highly secure declarative configuration model. No surprises, no drift, and we apply security patches within 48 hours of CVE releases.
How do updates work? Will they break things?
Updates are fully tested and versioned. You always have the ability to rollback instantly to a previous known-good configuration, reducing the risk of downtime or broken apps.
What happens if something breaks?
It’s highly unlikely, but if something ever does break, DeclarativeOS makes rollbacks simple and fast. Thanks to the underlying NixOS architecture, you can instantly revert your system to a previous known-good state – no reinstalling, no downtime. And if you need help, our support team is ready to assist.
What if we want to migrate gradually?
That’s fine. DeclarativeOS can run alongside your current infrastructure. Some clients start with dev teams or non-critical endpoints before rolling out org-wide.
Can I try it before committing?
Yes. We offer a 7-day trial with a bootable SSD preloaded with DeclarativeOS. No installation needed – just plug in in (after quick BIOS tweak) and try it for yourself!
What makes DeclarativeOS different from other Linux distros?
DeclarativeOS is based on NixOS, but tailored for enterprise environments. That means:
- Fully declarative system configs
- Enterprise support and updates
- Custom apps and modules
- Real tech support (not just forums)
Do any real companies use Nix?
Yep. Google (yes, that one) uses Nix for Firebase Studio, package management and sandboxing. They’ve even used Nix as a reference point for developing Bazel and image generation workflows. Other well known companies can be found here.
